Bug Tracking & Issue Management

Capture, triage and close defects without losing the reproduction steps.

What this category is really about

Every team already has an issue tracker. The question is whether it is the right shape for defects specifically — bugs need environment metadata, reproduction steps, severity separate from priority, and a link back to the build that introduced them.

The adjacent and often more valuable purchase is capture tooling: a browser extension or SDK that attaches console logs, network requests, browser version and a session replay to the ticket automatically. It removes the single largest source of wasted engineering time, which is a bug report that cannot be reproduced.

What to evaluate

01

Automatic context capture

Console, network, device and replay attached without the reporter doing anything.

02

Triage throughput

Keyboard-driven bulk triage beats a beautiful board when 200 tickets arrive after a release.

03

Developer workflow fit

Branch and PR linking, and status that updates from a commit message.

04

Cost at reporter scale

If designers, support and QA all file bugs, per-seat pricing dominates. Look for free reporter seats.

Common mistakes

  • Severity and priority collapsed into one field, so everything becomes P1.
  • A bug backlog nobody grooms, which turns into an archive rather than a queue.
  • Filing bugs in a separate system from the work, so fixing them never gets planned.
