Mobile App Testing

Automate native, hybrid and React Native apps on iOS and Android.

What this category is really about

Mobile automation is harder than web for structural reasons: two platforms with unrelated UI toolkits, a build-and-install step before every run, real-device flakiness, and app-store review sitting between you and a hotfix.

Appium remains the interoperability standard, wrapping XCUITest and Espresso behind one WebDriver API. The native frameworks are faster and more stable but bind you to one platform. Newer YAML-driven tools trade expressiveness for a far shorter path to a working suite.

What to evaluate

01

Platform parity

Many tools are strong on Android and thin on iOS. Test both before committing.

02

Build pipeline integration

The tool has to accept an .ipa/.apk from CI and run unattended. Check signing and provisioning support.

03

Real-device access

Either you maintain a device lab or you rent one. Both are real costs; budget for one.

04

Flake handling

Element location on mobile is far less stable than on web. Retry policy and smart locators earn their keep.

Common mistakes

  • Testing only on the two newest flagship devices your team happens to carry.
  • Ignoring the interrupted-state matrix: incoming call, low battery, lost network, backgrounded app.
  • Automating onboarding flows that a real user sees exactly once.
