Cross-Browser & Device Cloud
Run your suite on browsers, versions and real phones you don't own.
What this category is really about
A device cloud rents you browsers and real handsets by the minute. You point your existing Selenium, Playwright, Cypress or Appium suite at their grid and get parallelism plus a matrix you could never maintain in-house.
The economics are the whole decision. Pricing is per parallel session, and teams routinely buy for peak CI concurrency and pay for it around the clock. Work out your actual peak, then check whether the vendor charges for queueing.
What to evaluate
Real devices vs. emulators
Emulators are cheaper and fine for layout. Camera, biometrics, push and performance behaviour need real hardware.
Parallel session pricing
The single biggest line item. Compare cost per parallel session per month, not the headline plan name.
Debugging artifacts
Video, network logs, device logs and interactive live sessions. Without them a remote failure is a black box.
Local tunnelling
Testing an app that is not publicly reachable requires a stable, secure tunnel. Quality varies a lot.
Common mistakes
- Buying parallel sessions for a peak that happens twice a day.
- Assuming the newest iOS device is available on day one — provisioning lags.
- Running the entire suite on twelve browser/OS combinations when two would have caught every real defect.
